Quantcast Bonsai Intensive - Fall 2008

Bonsai Intensive - Fall 2008

Posted Nov 21, 2008 by matsubonsai

I've just returned from another Bonsai Intensive with Boon Manakitivipart.  Why fly across the country to for bonsai?  Well, it's a great opportunity to work with a very talented bonsai artist.  Also, there are few similar chances to work on high quality material.

Fall work was centered mostly around pines.  Needle pulling and thinning is done during the last part of fall to prepare the tree for winter, and for the coming spring.

Junipers can also be wired at this time.  This is a great opprtunity to thin and arrange branches with the growth put on this past year.

Maples should be cut back and thinned some in fall.  A little thinning and trimming helps redirect growth, prevents die-back, and gives you a chance to clean up and review the tree.

Here's some pictures of just one of the project trees that we worked on.  Rory, Foo, Boon, and I worked on this collected Ponderosa pine.

Rory and I get to work Cleaning a jin. Me and Boon setting raffia and wire
Me and Boon wiring and bending Finished for the time being Rory, Foo, and me showing off our work

That's a beautiful pine. When you say collected, do you mean that you collected it?

Zach, thanks for the comment. The tree was collected several years ago. This was just one of the trees that was worked on during the last intensive.
