Matsu Monday - Root Over Rock

Posted Jul 7, 2008 by matsubonsai

Matsu Monday

I had very limited spare time last week, but was able to work on a project that I've had planned for the last year or two.  I've had the rock pictured below for a few years now.  It's perfect for root-over-rock.

I've paired the rock with this low rectangle with soft corners. I've had the pot for a while, but was never sure which tree to place inside. Once the pot is all cleaned up it will be ready for Spring potting.

Several Japanese Black Pine seedlings were planted in the Spring of 2007 in preparation for the root-over-rock project. Next March I'll make the final selection and plant the black pine onto the rock. Pictures will be posted on this bonsai blog at that time.  The wire on the rock shows the proposed shape to the tree.

I have a juniper bonsai in a clay pot on my back step. It was scorched in intense heat over a year ago and I have been praying it will come back. I still talk to it and water it but the green color hasn't yet returned. I would be grateful for your advice.

Liara, I'm sorry to say that it's probably a gonner. Junipers tend to hold their green color even after they have died, so if it's turning brown it's far too late. I would suggest trying again by visiting a local nursery and seeking out a friend in bonsai. Someone local to you could be a big help with questions regarding your local climate and growing conditions. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

matsubonsai, I am a strong believer in reincarnation. Since huamn spirit can pass over, and move between planes I have faith that plant and tree spirit can do so on some level as well.

As it happens, I discussed the juniper bonsai situation with a bonsai specialist at a local Australian market. This was back just after the scorching weather incident. That person told me although my situation sounded bleak to him, hope always exists. I was advised to use some nutrients and water at specific intervals as well as TLC. If you think of any additional thoughts, I would welcome them.

I wish you luck, Liara. If you can locate any liquid seaweed or deodorized fish emulsion then I would suggest tyring one or both, rotate once a week. Both are low strength fertilizers and help with stressed plants. Keep me posted on the progress!

Finding the perfect rock is the reason I have yet to do a root-over-rock project. Nice work.

I find it very hard to find a good rock to my Bonsai's, and have not the patience to do it like you do. Good luck!
